Sent Emails

I sent emails to the remaining people that were on the google doc list for people who will be awarded. I even included all three professors to come. So Catherine when you make the awards, add all three professors awards as well. The names are on the syllabus.

Christine, I sent the emails to the nominees and the organizations as well.

And I think that's about it for tonight. :)

Catering

So the catering part of our event is good to go.
Carrie who is going to help us with funding has approved our total amount and she will talk to Rose and it will be signed.
Also, I already put the order in and that is about it.

Should We??

Hey group,

I was just wondering....Are we suppose to add the professors on our blog and fb page?
If so let's ask for their accounts so that we can search.
I believe they mentioned something like that so they could observe the process of what we are doing.

Website and FB event link

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=176602832392074 This is the fb event page. Im going to purchase a domain for our website which is currently http://gmcguin.tripod.com/ . The problem is projectsmile.com or .org isn't available. It would have to be projectsmilecommitment.com or something else? Any ideas i can look into to see if their available? our own domain name would just make it so much easier for organizaitions or people that want to attend to find us on the internet.

What's the link for the group and the event?

Catering

Okay!

So I'm sorry I wasn't present in class. It was crazy...but anyways!
I looked up on Jason's Deli and if it is okay I'm going to order:

Croissant Party Sandwich Tray (Medium,20 croissants): $60
Party Pinwheel Tray(27 pinwheels): $40
Fresh Fruit & Cheese Tray(medium, serves 16-21 people): $65
Drinks(canned soda, 25 people): $32.25

I have tried these three platters and I think it would be perfect.
The total would be $197.25. Is this too much?
We can take out one of the platters between the croissant&pinwheel. Let me know.

If there are any other opinions, let me know.

In case you guys didn't notice

There is a loud religious preacher guy outside the JC right now (2 PM). I don't know if it's Brother Micah/Mike or not, but there is a crowd gathered around him.

Award Certificate!

Herro Everyone!

I hope everyone enjoyed and took advantage of the awesome weather we had today! =]

So I was on www.certificatestreet.com and I found some to share with everybody.

What I looked for in searching the templates was bright colors, and just a happy, positive feeling!
The first one I thought was good because it has various colors, very diverse.
The second caught my attention because it's a globe, also very diverse, but it tells us we're all one.
The third is a bright yellow color with a big sunny smiley face.

Tell me your opinions. Which ones you like, or if I should search for more. I mean I will be searching for more, but everyone's opinions on what the certificate should look like. What kind of visual picture we would like to present on the award.
Thanks!

-Catherine Oh

Catering

So I was checking out Jason Deli's event planning/catering section, and we actually have to give details and then they would call us back and discuss about the menu.
Therefore, we're gonna have to figure out how many people would come to the event so that I could figure out an estimate. I'm sure they do need some time ahead but not too much.
If we can figure out the number of people by the 16th, it will be cool.

My portion-- idk if this is okay..

The Social Change Model is a key concept in leadership to try to foster a positive social change. The three components work in tandem with one another: the individual, the group, and the community. Our project’s framework was inspired from six individual’s ideas against bigotry and hate groups especially at George Mason University. We created a group to take a more proactive approach and find a common goal to share with the community. The George Mason University Community is beginning to take a notice of what we are doing and creating solidarity within our efforts to celebrate diversity (1). According to the Social Change Model initially researched at the University of California Los Angeles in 1994, leaders can contribute in any aspect of the process of change. The “Seven ‘C’s’” as they are called, seen within the three aspects of social change (individual, group, and community/society) are all effective measurements of successful social movements(2):
The Individual: It begins with a person’s idea being brought to light for others to catch onto and join in, to which other people follow and thus create a movement.
- Consciousness of self: This relates to us having our idea of anti-bigotry and anti-hate and realizing we want to take a more proactive approach to find solidarity.
- Congruence: The freedoms we have in the USA are powerful and can be used in countless ways. We want to allow those who feel oppressed to realize their value and the differences in thoughts are worth evaluating.
- Commitment: The feeling of pride and integrity with supporting your decision to go ahead and attempt something that has never really been done before.
The Group: Although the catalyst was our class project, we decided to take on the challenge of opening it up to the entire Mason community.
-       Collaboration: Alerting over three hundred student organizations of this cause and honoring the students who were already doing things to rectify discriminatory acts, while alerting other students that there is a group of us working to make things better for everyone.
-       Common Purpose: We have a common purpose at the university level to do well, excel and attain a degree. Some students are also trying to enjoy college and the “college experience” without mindless bigots creating barriers. Overall we all want an environment to focus on our studies.
-       Controversy with civility: The existence of hate groups, extremists and radical groups is inevitable and to an extent perfectly constitutional for them to express their opinions. It is until they cross the line of being offensive and demeaning toward someone else, the slander that occurs on our campus should not affect the daily lives of our students.
The Community:
-       Citizenship: When there is war, famine, or other societal issues we need to be more supportive of one another, because in any other situation it could be you. That idea of unity is something that should bond us all. Taking a stand to speak for those who have lost their voice.

Meeting

Hey group, Sorry I was not able to make the meeting tonite, I had to work in Maryland with my family. I emailed Dan Walsch tonight asking him if he could be a guest speaker at the event. Lets keep our fingers crossed!! As for funding, I believe 15 dollars will suffice for the poster board and the poster board materials. -Arlene

GOINGS ONS

Whats up dudes and dudettes? Here's what garrett, josh, gloria, and catherine were thinking after tonights meeting. Our date for our event is Friday April 29th at 7 pm pending confirmation from Mason Hall. Here's what we want to get done this week. -Kiosk advertising our event. We want to have a nice poster and some flyers and/or brochures to show to students and hand out. Since our event will most likely be on april 29th we could set up a kiosk for one day the week of the 18th and again on the week of the 25th. (All of us in shifts) -We also want to distribute flyers and hang up brochures/flyers around campus advertising the event. Which means we need a logo and a kick ass design. We will post those each Monday so they will be there all week. (Arlene and Josh) -Contact Jelly belly to see if they will send us free jelly bean packs for the event. (Garrett) -Catering for the event. (Gloria) -NCC funding? We were thinking we want to have everything else done on this list first before we ask for funding so we seem really well established and can seem more deserving of more dinero. That's why we should get this stuff done this week. NCC will probably want to have an idea of how big the event will be and how much money we may need to pull it off. Soooooo, lets come up with some estimates soon based on our roles in the group. -FB event page. (Garrett) -Awards certificates (Catherine) -Contacting guest speakers for the event. Arlene had somebody in mind and we could also contact the NCC diversity team to see if they would want anybody to speak. (Arlene and Garrett) -Sign in sheet for the organizations and people. We also are gonna want to thank these organizations after the event so it's important to know who is there. (Gloria) Other things to consider: Microphones and speaker system? Projector? Chairs? Tables? Podium? Video camera?

Bigotry on college campuses.

Rough draft for my section of research paper

I'm posting it to see what you guys think so far. Thoughts? Questions? Suggestions? Here goes:

"When considering causation behind the formation of hate groups, nativism plays a significant role. Nativism is a belief that favors the interests of traditional inhabitants of an area over the interests of people that do not fit the definition of a traditional inhabitant. It can play a role in the ideologies of a wide range of hate groups, including ideologies based upon race, ethnicity, and religion. However, it’s most profound appearance comes in the form of anti-immigrant ideologies.

"These such groups have proliferated in the United States since the 1990s when anti-immigrant xenophobia began to rise to levels not seen since the 1920s.1 The most egregious of these groups regularly use racist propaganda to promote their values. Also, conspiracy theories usually play a prominent role. Two such conspiracies specifically stand out, and can be used as something of an identifier of such groups. One theory involves Mexico or Mexicans having a plan, usually under a veil of secrecy and referred to as Plan de Aztlan or some related term, to reconquer the Southwestern United States. The other common theory alleges the leaders of Mexico, the United States, and Canada have a secret intention to merge their countries into a European Union-like organization that is to be known as a “North American Union”."

I am currently in the process of getting in contact with someone at the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) in order to get an "in their own words" description of themselves. They are one of the groups categorized as anti-immigrant, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. I'm waiting for a call back. When I get that statement, the section I quoted above will specifically focus on FAIR.

Similar: Dream Act

The first three months of 2011 have shown that a lack of comprehensive federal immigration reform means one thing and that is that US state governments are taking immigration legislation into their own hands.

This update from Americas Quarterly shows that not all state immigration legislation has to do with tightening the borders. Though the DREAM Act failed to pass earlier this year , New York state has joined the ranks of fellow US states California, Connecticut, Illinois and Maryland in trying to pass state versions of the bill that would establish a path to legal residency for qualifying undocumented immigrants.

Following its defeat in Congress, the New York State Youth Leadership Council, a youth-led nongovernmental organization dedicated to promoting equal opportunity for immigrant youth, mobilized an aggressive campaign to introduce and help support a state version of the bill.

The new bill, sponsored by Democratic State Senator Bill Perkins of Manhattan, would offer young undocumented immigrants certain rights and privileges currently afforded only to legal residents and citizens. This includes the authorization to hold certain state jobs and to apply for a driver’s license. While undocumented immigrants in New York already qualify for in-state tuition fees, the bill would enable them to apply for state financial assistance in the form of grants, loans and scholarships. It would also provide them with access to health care.

The latest version of the California Dream Act passed the state Assembly’s Higher Education Committee earlier this month. AB 130 and 131 would allow some undocumented students at the state’s public colleges and universities to apply for institutional financial aid and for assistance from the state’s Cal Grants program.

The bills were introduced by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), who has made something of a career of trying to get a Dream Act approved in California. Four of his earlier bills made it through the assembly and senate but were vetoed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. A fifth was put on hold and died when the legislative session ended.

The bills “will help foster the development of future architects, doctors, teachers, scientists, and scholars that are key to the success of the California economy,” said Cedillo in a statement to the committee. “Public education is the lifeblood of our democracy that allows individuals to transform themselves within one generation.”

At least one opponent not only believes that undocumented students shouldn’t get aid, but also wants them to pay the full out-of-state tuition.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R-Hesperia) has introduced a bill that would overturn AB 540, the 2001 law that allows undocumented students who graduate from a California high school and meet other requirements to pay in-state tuition at the University of California, Cal State University, and community colleges. Donnelly said AB 540 is costing the state tens of millions of dollars a year.

“At a time when we’re fighting over funds and eliminating access to college by driving up tuition, decreasing the number of classes offered and decreasing the number of spots, we should be putting our money where our values are,” said Donnelly.

According to the state’s nonpartisan Legislative Analyst, however, most AB 540 students at UC and CSU are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants who went to high school in California, left the state for a few years, and then returned for college or graduate school.

The bills now head to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Updates from tonight's 2nd meeting

This Tuesday, bring to class your rough draft of your one pager.
We can review them and have a finalized paper by Sunday the 3rd. [Post your final paper onto the blogger then and Garrett will compile them all by Tuesday the 5th-- it's due the 7th, so we have time for last minute updates if necessary]

Also this Tuesday we'll discuss delegating.
As far as the action project, i'm being ambitious, but i really think it'd be admirable if we can pull it off.
In order of priority:
---> Get approval from Rader Pascarell & Barnard: 1) that we can make it a class field-trip, 2) if we could get NCC to fund renting the space and food catering & who to contact for that and 3) any other suggestions they have
--->Reserve Mason Hall and the Messe Conference Room [all on the 1st floor] & kiosks if we so choose
--->Create general e-mail with proposal & link to the website garrett created http://gmcguin.tripod.com/index.html
---> email the GMU organizations & upon their reply send them the google doc form to nominate their most inclusive people to award
---> create a logo and flyer to 1)Print [print services-on campus] & post around campus [JC, SUB I& II, Robinson, Residence Halls] 2) create FB event page with flyer as image and as photo so people can make it their profile pictures
---> make poster board with basic info on what we are doing and who we are & buy certificate paper to print out awards
---> Catering, decide from where and how much to get
---> Aside from student groups, invite political officials and candidates, grassroots organizations, creators of "9500 Liberty" [one of which is a mason alumn], Jelly Belly Co. [donation?]
---> Meet with org presidents to be sure they understand their part and are on the same page as us

Online work: tripod website [to explain], facebook group [to connect], facebook event [to gather], google group [to network], google form [to award], paypal account? [monetary donations from the public?]

Physical Work: picking up printed papers, posting flyers, meeting with orgs, setting up the space, MCing the event...

Funding:
-print services: flyers about 30 papers? & maybe the Award Certificates
-reserving Mason Hall & JC Kiosks: perhaps through NCC or another Org
-food: approved caterers http://approvedcatering.gmu.edu/approvedcaterers.html how much? of what?

idk if i forgot anything. yes, it seems like a lot, but it really isn't =] communication is key, keep CCing everyone whenever a contact is made, and when mass e-mailing the orgs, put it in CC, not TO b/c then the e-mail will be a bunch of e-mail addresses before it gets to the actual message.

We'll talk more later. I just wanted to get everything out of my head.

Bigotry on college campuses.

Hey guys! Here's some of the news articles and research I think I will be using for our research paper. My part of the paper is about bigotry and hate groups on college campuses. I will be talking about the messages these groups are conveying, why they choose to come to campuses and talk/harass college students and the fight against these groups in our local communities and on campus.

This might be useless, but as I was doing some research on DREAM Act, I came across these two pictures. Although there's no explanations to these two comics, just by looking at the picture seemed strong and powerful enough to me. I just wanted to share.

yay

so I finally figured out how to work this invitation thing.
Yes, I know it's suppose to be easy and I am being very stupid.
Anyways, again I'm sorry I can't make it this Sunday.
But I will definitely email/post my part of what I researched.
One question though: Are you guys going to share what we researched? Or do we have to finalize our section and give it in by Sunday?

Anyways Peace!

Research paper

let's talk about the six different sections we need to each write about a page and a half on.
we can combine topics or whatever, but each individual needs to write a page and a half to spread the work out evenly.
sound good?
